Join: Wall of US

Our mission is to make it simply irresistible to engage in our democracy. We will serve up four concrete acts of resistance each week for the next four years.

To make it simply irresistible for Americans to become active participants in rebuilding our democracy.

AMELIA MIAZAD is an Afghan-born American girl (no birth certificate folks, you’ll just have to trust her) who became even more true-blue after the November 8th election. Amelia has a law degree from Berkeley Law. In addition to practicing law, Amelia has founded non-profits and led higher educational programs, initiatives, and social enterprises. An eternal optimist, Amelia believes in the power of collective action and looks forward to building the wall-of-us together.

Amelia’s role is strategic vision and content development.

KARA GANTER grew up in rural Wisconsin, where it is not polite to talk about politics and the most appropriate way to deal with feelings is crying in the shower. When that stopped working post-election, she decided an alternate coping strategy was necessary. She’s a lawyer, a writer, and a technophile. Kara has journalism and law degrees from the University of Wisconsin and she’s trained in instructional design, educational technology and pedagogy. Now she puts all those tools to work to help build programs to train the next generation of leaders in law and social justice.

Kara’s role is creative vision, web design, and operations – because even a website about resisting ugly policies should be pretty.

We are fortunate to have advisors and volunteers who are leaders in law, policy, technology, government, media, and education.

The first woman to have won the majority of votes for President of the United States recently said,

“Our constitutional democracy demands our participation, not just every four years but all the time.

— Hillary Clinton, November 9, 2016

Our constitutional democracy, our world, and our planet are all under siege. All-of-us must build a big, beautiful wall of resistance.

Action Agenda: Townhall Project 2018

Did you know that your attendance and participation in Townhall events, held by your elected representatives, is one of the most powerful ways to influence them?

The Townhall Project 2018 is a very simple idea. Use volunteers to maintain a running calendar of Townhall events nationwide. Who, when, and where available with a click.

Show up! Find out where & when here.

Action Agenda: 5 Calls

Turn your passive participation into active resistance. Facebook likes and Twitter retweets can’t create the change you want to see. Calling your Government on the phone can.

Spend 5 minutes, make 5 calls.

Calling is the most effective way to influence your representative. Read more about why calling works.

5 Calls:

  • provides phone numbers and scripts so calling is quick and easy
  • uses your location to find your local representatives so your calls have more impact

Why Calling Works

Calling members of Congress is the most effective way to have your voice heard. Calls are tallied by staffers and the count is given to your representatives, informing them how strongly their constituents feel about a current issue. The sooner your reach out, the more likely it is that your voice will influence their position.

Don’t just take it from us:

5 Calls does the research for each issue, determining out which representatives are most influential for which topic, collecting phone numbers for those offices and writing scripts that clearly articulate a progressive position. You just have to call.

Are we not covering an issue we should be? Please reach out.

Calling Tips

Calls should take less than a minute. You’ll be speaking to a staffer, so make your point clearly so they can tally your opinion correctly. The provided scripts are useful but you can add your own words.

Be respectful. The staffers that pick up the phone aren’t looking to challenge you and you should treat them with the same respect you expect from them, regardless of which party they work for.

Who made 5 Calls?

We’re a group of like-minded volunteers who want to make advocacy accessible. We hope 5 Calls will make it effortless for regular people to have a voice when it’s needed most.

5 Calls is brought to you by @nickoneill, @syntheticmethod, @monteiro, @stewartsc, @liamdanger, @capndesign, @gotwarlost, @jameshome, @robynshhh and more supporters.

Action Agenda: It Starts Today

The one thing on which everyone opposed to Trump and this radical GOP Congress can agree is that we need a Congress that’s going to work for the people, and not just rubber stamp the Trump/Ryan/McConnell agenda. To do that, Democrats need to take back Congress. There is strength in numbers and we need to replace as many Republicans with Democrats as possible in the 2018 midterm elections.

We know that to win those races, Democrats are going to need money.

And we believe in the profound power of large numbers of people making small, monthly, contributions.

Directly funding every Democratic nominee for Congress in 2018 is not the only thing people should be doing to resist Trump and the radical GOP Congress, but it is a simple, easy thing that all of us who can afford to do should be doing along with everything else.

We hope you will join us in this effort.

You can start today – click here.

Action Agenda: Flippable

The 2016 election left us not only with a Trump Presidency and Republican control of the U.S. House and Senate, but with Republican control of our states – 33 governor’s seats and 71 legislative bodies. Since 2010, the GOP has seized control of our state governments, restricting our rights and stacking the electoral deck in their favor through redistricting and voter suppression laws.

Our plan is to turn our country blue from the ground up by focusing on state governments. We will build a community of progressives committed to flipping state seats and organizing their communities in defense of progress. We’ll give you data on the most flippable seats and provide meaningful actions to win, through spreading awareness, volunteering, and donating.

In 2017, we’ll focus on three states:

  • Virginia will be electing a new governor and holding elections for all 100 seats in its state house. Virginia’s state house is nearly ⅔ Republican – but the state has voted blue in the past three Presidential elections. By encouraging great Democrats to run for state seats and supporting them, we can make sure that Virginia’s state legislature reflects its blue electorate.
  • North Carolina will be drawing new district lines and electing a new state legislature, following afederal court ruling that its districts had been unconstitutionally drawn on racial lines. There is a huge opportunity here to capitalize on North Carolina’s shift to blue, and to provide an ally to Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.
  • New Jersey will be electing a new governor, allowing us to replace Chris Christie with a Democrat. It will also be holding General Assembly elections, with all seats up for grabs. While New Jersey’s state legislature is more reliably Democrat, we cannot give up ground.

We’ll also continue to alert you to special elections happening around the country to fill vacant seats.

2018 is a big year, with midterms across the country, 36 governor’s races, and nearly 6,000 state legislature seats up for grabs. We are currently developing a flippability model to determine the highest-potential districts. Based on electoral history and importance to 2020 elections, we’re keeping our eye on the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • Florida
  • Ohio
  • Michigan
  • Wisconsin
  • Minnesota
  • Colorado
  • Nevada
  • New Mexico
  • Washington
  • Oregon
  • Maine
  • New Hampshire
  • Connecticut
  • New York
  • Georgia
  • Illinois

Action Agenda: Swing Left

Swing Districts are places where the winner of the last House of Representatives election was determined by a thin margin. Swing Left helps you find and commit to supporting progressives in your closest Swing District so that you can help ensure we take back the House in 2018.

Find your closest Swing District and join the team to learn about actionable opportunities as they become available.

Why the house?

The 2018 House elections are the next best chance for progressives to regain power in our government.

  • There are 52 Swing Districts—places where the last election was won by 15% of the vote or less. We need to win 80% of all Swing Districts to take back the House.
  • If we win all 17 Democratic-held Swing Districts, we need to flip 24 of the remaining Republican ones. We’ll keep the Swing Left community up to date as these numbers shift.
  • The 2018 Senate map heavily favors Republicans, making the House a more viable place to focus our efforts.
  • House races receive less attention, so your dollars, hours, and talents count more.
  • We’re starting early to unify progressives who promote tolerance, equality, unity and fairness. To out-organize Republicans, we can’t wait.

How it works

Enter your email address to join a Swing District Team, and you’ll be put on a carefully-curated mailing list moderated by a local District Leader. You’ll learn about opportunities to take action as soon as they become available:

  • Learn more about the district and connect with other Team members
  • Fundraise or donate to local progressive candidates
  • Spread the word on social media
  • Phone bank or volunteer
  • Canvass, attend events, and more

We all want to take back the House in 2018, but most of us don’t live in Swing Districts, where the races really matter. If you live…

  • Outside this district, you’ll receive opportunities to help from afar.
  • Near this district (or it’s easy for you to travel), you can decide to help out in person.
  • Inside this district, your support and knowledge are critical! Join your team and help channel its efforts.

Join: RISE Stronger

Rise Stronger, formerly Rise When We Fall, emerged after the 2016 elections and has grown to become a citizen watchdog organization of over 30,000 Americans who are ready to ensure elected officials and the government are both responsible and accountable to the people. Founded by former White House officials, Rise Stronger seeks to reinvigorate what it means to be a citizen by connecting a far-reaching grassroots operation with a deep network of policy experts to create a powerful movement in both size and substance.

Rise Stronger provides the infrastructure to help thousands of Americans formed over a dozen policy working groups, uniting the vast experience of former White House and government officials, policy experts, advocates, with the energy and voice of concerned citizens. These groups cover a wide-range of issues including climate change, civil rights, the economy, immigration, health care, and national security. Working directly with our grassroots members, Rise Stronger produces and disseminates political analysis and calls to action to over a hundred different advocacy groups in ways that are accessible, credible, and effective in mobilizing action.

The grassroots operations is the heart of this organization. Rise Stronger has organized thousands of people into local chapters across this country to create the opportunity for real, meaningful dialogue that seeks to use in-person gathering to bridge the divides and differences between diverse communities. The goal is to give citizens a platform where they can engage with their community and feel empowered to take ownership over their democracy.

Rise Stronger is turning a groundswell of energy into concrete action. Over Inauguration weekend in Washington D.C., Rise Stronger organized and co-hosted “Rise Above” (, a two-day conference that connected more than 800 participants with over 50 inspiring speakers including U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin, Executive VP of Planned Parenthood Dawn Laguens, Supreme Court Litigator Deepak Gupta, and more. The conference built on the energy of the Women’s March by connecting some of the largest advocacy groups in the nation with a new generation of innovative organizations and activists to generate tangible plans on how best to respond to the Trump Administration.

With over 30,000 members working hard across the country, Rise Stronger is eager to join with, and stand alongside, a united front of advocacy groups to create a powerful, sustained, and smart movement. For more information: please visit
