Action Agenda: #WeWillReplaceYou

Tell the Democrats:
Resist Trump or #WeWillReplaceYou

Donald Trump is a threat to the American people and everything we believe in. Millions are rising up in resistance, but too many Democrats have been enabling and collaborating with him instead.

Sign up to tell Democrats: “Do everything you can to Resist Trump, or we will replace you with someone who will.”

Why threaten to primary Democrats?

Elected officials tend to take the path of least resistance on most things—unless you create a political cost for them. That’s where we come in. The growing anti-Trump movement springing up at town hall meetings and protests across the country has already pushed Democratic strategy in the right direction—but not nearly far enough.

Three Democratic Senators voted “yes” to confirm Rex Tillerson, a Big Oil baron with close ties to Putin who conspired to destroy our climate by suppressing evidence about global warming. Fourteen Senate Democrats joined with Republicans to confirm Rep. Mike Pompeo to be our new CIA director, despite Pompeo’s past Islamophobic remarks and ties to far-right conspiracy theorists, his position in favor of unconstitutional surveillance on Americans, and his enthusiastic support for torture and secret detention. And Senate Democrats like Dick Durbin, Claire McCaskill, and Jon Tester have all voiced the opinion that Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch deserves “a fair shake”—after Republicans refused to even meet with President Obama’s nominee Merrick Garland for almost a year and effectively stole a Supreme Court nomination.

This cannot stand. We will only defeat Republicans on the local, state, and federal level if we go on the offensive.

The next crucial step is escalating our demands, and demonstrating that we won’t accept anything less than full opposition—by showing Democrats just how many people are willing to back primary challenges to Democratic collaborators and enablers of Trump. Democrats must know there is a price for collaborating with Trump. Any Democrats who would give legitimacy or support to Trump do not represent us and must be replaced by people who will stand up for our lives, our values, and our democracy. Add your name.

What does it mean to fight Trump?

Democrats have a lot of power to stop Trump’s agenda—if they choose to use it. If Democrats decided to fight, they could use Congressional rules of order to grind business as usual to a halt to stop the unconstitutional Muslim ban, fight the theft of a Supreme Court nomination, and demand Steve Bannon be fired, for instance. Instead, many Democrats seem to be operating under the delusional assumption that if they play nice with Trump, he’ll magically become more reasonable. That kind of logic just results in us losing more ground every day—and it’s why we need to hold Democrats’ feet to the fire.

Resisting Trump would mean, at a minimum:

  • Voting no on all Trump appointees and fighting all of Trump’s legislative priorities
  • Fighting the unconstitutional Republican theft of a Supreme Court nomination
  • Using Congressional processes and rules of order to systematically bring all business to a crawl to block Trump’s agenda and demand Steve Bannon be fired
  • Publicly supporting impeachment if Trump is found to have broken the law or violated the Constitution

How will you decide who to primary?

The short answer is that we’ll identify where we think we can make the biggest impact, and take direction from the growing resistance movement (including by surveying the people who sign up here.) This is a grassroots project, but there’s no limit on how big we’ll go if the support is there.

In the best case scenario, this pledge becomes a tool that successfully pushes Democrats to fight Trump harder. The goal is not (necessarily) to primary every Democrat in Congress, but to make the Democrats who are there do what we’re asking them to do: fight Trump with all they’ve got. In other words, the most effective threat is one you don’t have to follow through on.

We’re a group of organizers and activists who have helped to build both mass movements and large-scale electoral programs. Many of us were involved in the Bernie campaign in 2016, and we saw what an army of small-dollar donors and volunteers can do when they commit themselves to something important. We believe in people power, and we’re committed to helping translate the energy we’ve all seen in the streets since Trump took office into an electoral force capable of winning—starting in the primaries by defeating Democratic incumbents who are failing us.

Support: Run for Something

Run for Something will recruit and support talented, passionate youngsters who will advocate for progressive values now and for the next 30 years, with the ultimate goal of building a progressive bench.

We’ll take a chance on people the usual “institutions” might never encounter. We’ll help people run for offices like state legislatures, mayorships, city council seats, and more.

We’ll do whatever it takes to get more under-35 year-olds on the ballot.

1  We’re going to shout from the rooftops about running for office. Constantly. We won’t shut up about it. We’ll talk to reporters. We’ll talk to friends, strangers, the Starbucks barista — anyone. We’ll run online ads about it. We’ll be annoying. (You’ll love it.)

2  We’ll talk to every single person who expresses interest in running. Maybe over email, or gchat, or on the phone, or (gasp) in real life. This will take some time – but if this is what it takes to find new candidates, this is what we’ll do.

3  We’ll connect people to training organizations. Places like Wellstone, EMILY’s List, Latino Victory Project, She Should Run, Emerge, Higher Heights, and more are already off to the races with incredible conferences and curriculum. We’ll help feed people into these programs.

4  For some of those candidates, we’ll take our support to the next level: $$$ and staff. We’ll raise funds, donate to campaigns directly through state-level PACs, and help these folks hire professional staff who can keep the momentum going.

Millennial  Right now, that means under the age of 35. We need young people.

Specifically, we’ll look for people who will run on the following  issues:

— A focus on inequality, raising incomes, and creating jobs

— Pro-choice

— Pro-health care for all

— Pro-LGBT equality

— Advocating for criminal justice reform

— Believing that climate change is real, man-made, and our responsibility to fight

— Pro-voting rights

— Pro-immigration reform

— Pro-campaign finance reform

— Pro-gun violence prevention

We won’t serve as the “purity police.” It’s tempting to create a litmus test for more specific issues, but when working across the country, you have to take regional differences into account. A Democrat in Louisiana, for example, can’t emphasize the same thing as a Democrat in California.

Ultimately, a Democrat who shares your basic values is someone you can apply political pressure to once they’re in office. As we’ve seen, a Republican will almost never yield.

Intending to caucus as a Democrat if elected  Our goal is building a bench.

Diverse  Our candidates will be at least half women, as well as men of color. More broadly, we’ll look for diversity of experience. We certainly need more African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and people with disabilities to run for office, and we also need more scientists, more teachers, more engineers, and more non-lawyers to run for office.

Connected  We’ll look for candidates who have roots in their communities. This is literally a measurable quality: How many Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter connections does a person have? How many contacts in their phone that live in their district still? How can we measure their possible influence in their district? We don’t want to convince someone to move home to run — we want someone who calls a place home to step up and run.

That “X” factor  2016 taught us that who the candidate is matters. How well they communicate online and in person, how comfortable they are in their skin, and how “authentic” they can be are all important factors.

In 2017, we’d like to target Virginia and possibly North Carolina. However we’re willing to invest in good talent wherever it is.

The Rose Resistance began in LA on the evening of November 8th and spread across the nation within a few days. Our organization is dedicated to advocating for freedom, equality, and democracy – American values currently under siege. This group welcomes people across the political spectrum who are ready to fight fascism and white supremacy. The Rose Resistance is committed to nonviolent resistance through information, advocacy, and physical presence. On a national level, we provide information to counter Trump propaganda. On a local level, we organize in our cities and communities to help protect the people most endangered by the Trump regime.

Our name is inspired by the White Rose, a nonviolent, intellectual resistance movement against the Nazis, founded by students in Munich in 1942. The White Rose stood for truth in the face of lies, bravery against the worst odds, and the duty of good people to stand up for each other. The motto of authoritarianism is, “It can’t happen here.” We have a ten-year head start on the White Rose. We are organizing before it is too late. Because it can happen here – unless we stop it.

The Rose Resistance provides Action Agenda To Do Lists, issues education and has regional chapters that you can join.

Action Agenda: 5 Calls

Turn your passive participation into active resistance. Facebook likes and Twitter retweets can’t create the change you want to see. Calling your Government on the phone can.

Spend 5 minutes, make 5 calls.

Calling is the most effective way to influence your representative. Read more about why calling works.

5 Calls:

  • provides phone numbers and scripts so calling is quick and easy
  • uses your location to find your local representatives so your calls have more impact

Why Calling Works

Calling members of Congress is the most effective way to have your voice heard. Calls are tallied by staffers and the count is given to your representatives, informing them how strongly their constituents feel about a current issue. The sooner your reach out, the more likely it is that your voice will influence their position.

Don’t just take it from us:

5 Calls does the research for each issue, determining out which representatives are most influential for which topic, collecting phone numbers for those offices and writing scripts that clearly articulate a progressive position. You just have to call.

Are we not covering an issue we should be? Please reach out.

Calling Tips

Calls should take less than a minute. You’ll be speaking to a staffer, so make your point clearly so they can tally your opinion correctly. The provided scripts are useful but you can add your own words.

Be respectful. The staffers that pick up the phone aren’t looking to challenge you and you should treat them with the same respect you expect from them, regardless of which party they work for.

Who made 5 Calls?

We’re a group of like-minded volunteers who want to make advocacy accessible. We hope 5 Calls will make it effortless for regular people to have a voice when it’s needed most.

5 Calls is brought to you by @nickoneill, @syntheticmethod, @monteiro, @stewartsc, @liamdanger, @capndesign, @gotwarlost, @jameshome, @robynshhh and more supporters.

Action Agenda: It Starts Today

The one thing on which everyone opposed to Trump and this radical GOP Congress can agree is that we need a Congress that’s going to work for the people, and not just rubber stamp the Trump/Ryan/McConnell agenda. To do that, Democrats need to take back Congress. There is strength in numbers and we need to replace as many Republicans with Democrats as possible in the 2018 midterm elections.

We know that to win those races, Democrats are going to need money.

And we believe in the profound power of large numbers of people making small, monthly, contributions.

Directly funding every Democratic nominee for Congress in 2018 is not the only thing people should be doing to resist Trump and the radical GOP Congress, but it is a simple, easy thing that all of us who can afford to do should be doing along with everything else.

We hope you will join us in this effort.

You can start today – click here.
