INCITE! is a nation-wide network of radical feminists of color working to end violence against women, gender non-conforming, and trans people of color, and our communities. We support each other through direct action, critical dialogue, and grassroots organizing.

Who We Are

INCITE! Women, Gender Non-Conforming, and Trans people of Color* Against Violence is a national activist organization of radical feminists of color advancing a movement to end violence against women of color and our communities through direct action, critical dialogue and grassroots organizing.

INCITE! is made up of grassroots chapters and affiliates across the U.S. working on particular political projects such as police violence, reproductive justice, and media justice; a national collective that works to leverage this grassroots organizing on a national and transnational platform; an advisory collective that helps increase the capacity of national organizing; and thousands of members and supporters.

What We Do

INCITE! works with groups of women of color* and our communities to develop political projects that address the multiple forms of violence women of color experience in our lives, on our bodies, and in our communities.

We identify “violence against women of color” as a combination of “violence directed at communities,” such as police violence, war, and colonialism, and “violence within communities,” such as sexual and domestic violence.

Chapters and affiliates engage in strategies and projects that address both personal and state violence, acknowledging the ways that oppressions intersect in the lives of women of color. Some of those projects include producing a women of color radio show, challenging the non-profitization of antiviolence and other social justice movements, organizing rallies on street harassment, training women of color on self-defense, organizing mothers on welfare, building and running a grassroots clinic, supporting communities to engage in community accountability strategies, and much more.

In addition, INCITE!

How can you get involved?

INCITE! is excited to build a broad movement of women of color* for peace, safety, and justice! Please visit our get involved page or contact us for more information.

“I am a retired university librarian who is an information and fact-checking geek. Between Facebook, Twitter, email, and follower recommendations, I gather action items during the day and then update and upload the blog each morning. I then post this link to over 60 Facebook groups all over the country in hopes that it will help others take some meaningful action . We are all doing this work together! As always, please feel free to share this link and these lists with others!”

Everyday Susan Rogan posts a To Do List with Action Agenda items for activists. To Do lists are fully sourced with links to action items, stories concerning the issue and a brief explanation why the action or issue is important.

Support: Run for Something

Standard

00rfs

Run for Something will recruit and support talented, passionate youngsters who will advocate for progressive values now and for the next 30 years, with the ultimate goal of building a progressive bench.

We’ll take a chance on people the usual “institutions” might never encounter. We’ll help people run for offices like state legislatures, mayorships, city council seats, and more.

We’ll do whatever it takes to get more under-35 year-olds on the ballot.

HOW WE’RE GOING TO DO THIS, IN FOUR QUICK BULLET POINTS

1  We’re going to shout from the rooftops about running for office. Constantly. We won’t shut up about it. We’ll talk to reporters. We’ll talk to friends, strangers, the Starbucks barista — anyone. We’ll run online ads about it. We’ll be annoying. (You’ll love it.)

2  We’ll talk to every single person who expresses interest in running. Maybe over email, or gchat, or on the phone, or (gasp) in real life. This will take some time – but if this is what it takes to find new candidates, this is what we’ll do.

3  We’ll connect people to training organizations. Places like Wellstone, EMILY’s List, Latino Victory Project, She Should Run, Emerge, Higher Heights, and more are already off to the races with incredible conferences and curriculum. We’ll help feed people into these programs.

4  For some of those candidates, we’ll take our support to the next level: $$$ and staff. We’ll raise funds, donate to campaigns directly through state-level PACs, and help these folks hire professional staff who can keep the momentum going.

WHAT KIND OF PEOPLE WERE LOOKING FOR

Millennial  Right now, that means under the age of 35. We need young people.

Progressive

Specifically, we’ll look for people who will run on the following  issues:

— A focus on inequality, raising incomes, and creating jobs

— Pro-choice

— Pro-health care for all

— Pro-LGBT equality

— Advocating for criminal justice reform

— Believing that climate change is real, man-made, and our responsibility to fight

— Pro-voting rights

— Pro-immigration reform

— Pro-campaign finance reform

— Pro-gun violence prevention

We won’t serve as the “purity police.” It’s tempting to create a litmus test for more specific issues, but when working across the country, you have to take regional differences into account. A Democrat in Louisiana, for example, can’t emphasize the same thing as a Democrat in California.

Ultimately, a Democrat who shares your basic values is someone you can apply political pressure to once they’re in office. As we’ve seen, a Republican will almost never yield.

Intending to caucus as a Democrat if elected  Our goal is building a bench.

Diverse  Our candidates will be at least half women, as well as men of color. More broadly, we’ll look for diversity of experience. We certainly need more African Americans, Hispanics, Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and people with disabilities to run for office, and we also need more scientists, more teachers, more engineers, and more non-lawyers to run for office.

Connected  We’ll look for candidates who have roots in their communities. This is literally a measurable quality: How many Linkedin, Facebook, and Twitter connections does a person have? How many contacts in their phone that live in their district still? How can we measure their possible influence in their district? We don’t want to convince someone to move home to run — we want someone who calls a place home to step up and run.

That “X” factor  2016 taught us that who the candidate is matters. How well they communicate online and in person, how comfortable they are in their skin, and how “authentic” they can be are all important factors.

In 2017, we’d like to target Virginia and possibly North Carolina. However we’re willing to invest in good talent wherever it is.

Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes. It goes beyond the narrow nationalism that can be prevalent within some Black communities, which merely call on Black people to love Black, live Black and buy Black, keeping straight cis Black men in the front of the movement while our sisters, queer and trans and disabled folk take up roles in the background or not at all. Black Lives Matter affirms the lives of Black queer and trans folks, disabled folks, Black-undocumented folks, folks with records, women and all Black lives along the gender spectrum. It centers those that have been marginalized within Black liberation movements. It is a tactic to (re)build the Black liberation movement.

Black Lives Matter is a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of Black life. We are working to (re)build the Black liberation movement.

This is Not a Moment, but a Movement.

#BlackLivesMatter was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted for his crime, and dead 17-year old Trayvon was posthumously placed on trial for his own murder. Rooted in the experiences of Black people in this country who actively resist our dehumanization, #BlackLivesMatter is a call to action and a response to the virulent anti-Black racism that permeates our society.Black Lives Matter is a unique contribution that goes beyond extrajudicial killings of Black people by police and vigilantes.

It goes beyond the narrow nationalism that can be prevalent within Black communities, which merely call on Black people to love Black, live Black and buy Black, keeping straight cis Black men in the front of the movement while our sisters, queer and trans and disabled folk take up roles in the background or not at all.

What Does #BlackLivesMatter Mean?

When we say Black Lives Matter, we are broadening the conversation around state violence to include all of the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state.  We are talking about the ways in which Black lives are deprived of our basic human rights and dignity.

#BlackLivesMatter is working for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically and intentionally targeted for demise.  We affirm our contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppression.  We have put our sweat equity and love for Black people into creating a political project–taking the hashtag off of social media and into the streets. The call for Black lives to matter is a rallying cry for ALL Black lives striving for liberation.

Black Lives Matter offers opportunities to learn, to act and to join the movement – for everybody – black folks, queer folks, straight folks, all folks. If you are not part of the black community Black Lives Matter provides excellent opportunities to learn how to be a good ally.

We are committed to nonviolent resistance through information, advocacy, and physical presence. On a national level, we provide information to counter Trump propaganda. On a local level, we organize in our cities and communities to help protect the people most endangered by the Trump regime. Get involved. Your country needs you.

The Rose Resistance began in LA on the evening of November 8th and spread across the nation within a few days. Our organization is dedicated to advocating for freedom, equality, and democracy – American values currently under siege. This group welcomes people across the political spectrum who are ready to fight fascism and white supremacy. The Rose Resistance is committed to nonviolent resistance through information, advocacy, and physical presence. On a national level, we provide information to counter Trump propaganda. On a local level, we organize in our cities and communities to help protect the people most endangered by the Trump regime.

Our name is inspired by the White Rose, a nonviolent, intellectual resistance movement against the Nazis, founded by students in Munich in 1942. The White Rose stood for truth in the face of lies, bravery against the worst odds, and the duty of good people to stand up for each other. The motto of authoritarianism is, “It can’t happen here.” We have a ten-year head start on the White Rose. We are organizing before it is too late. Because it can happen here – unless we stop it.

The Rose Resistance provides Action Agenda To Do Lists, issues education and has regional chapters that you can join.

Action Agenda: The 65

Over 65 million Americans rejected Donald Trump on Election Day. What if we came together every day to fight for our vision of a diverse, inclusive America? Together, we can use our voices to remind Congress that they work for all of us.

Members of the The 65 are committed to making Congress work for us by mobilizing to speak up for values of diversity, inclusion, and equality. Each week, we’ll share a common mission, the Weekly Call to Action (WCTA), and commit to calling influential leaders to let them know where we stand, what we want, and how to best represent us. In the past, we’ve used WCTAs to:

  • Support the Office of Congressional Ethics when Republicans threatened to dismantle their own oversight committee
  • Call the Governor of North Dakota and the Army Corps of Engineers to demand safety for water protectors peacefully assembled at Standing Rock
  • Insist that Congress protect our access to affordable health care
  • Tell the Senate to block confirmations of unfit, unqualified, and unvetted Cabinet appointees

In addition to WCTAs, we maintain a bank of call scripts on a series of high-priority progressive issues, including gun violence prevention, affordable health care, reproductive rights, criminal justice reform, environmental protection, and more. We encourage you to refer to this list daily, picking issues that matter to you and reminding your representatives that you expect them to speak on your behalf.

Why We Do It

There’s no one right way to push back against the incoming administration. We are going to have to show up in person, in greater numbers and with more frequency than ever before. That said, calling is the easiest way to consistently make your voice heard. By committing to a weekly call routine, you’re standing up for your values and strengthening your resolve. Many of our members report that calling makes them feel more hopeful and more productive, even when the news seems bleak.

But that’s not the main reason we focus on calling. Time and again, Washington insiders have told us that, short of showing up in person,

Calling is the most effective way to communicate with Congress

In her series of viral tweets, Emily Ellsworth, a former Congressional staffer, says that the most effective way to communicate with representatives is to call them on the phone at their district offices. This message is underscored by Indivisible: A Practical Guide for Resisting the Trump Agenda. Compiled by former Congressional staffers, the guide lists grassroots organizing and calling as best practices for getting Congress to listen.

And it’s not just an opinion shared by staffers. Representatives themselves credit a barrage of phone calls as an important factor in their decision to abandon a recent proposal to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics.

Long story short: calls work!

We are The 65. Join us and call your legislators today!
