Act: Postcard Avalanche, Part 3 Demanding an Independent Investigation into the Trump – Russia Connections & Admin Efforts to Thwart

It has become increasingly clear that the Trump campaign, and subsequent administration, were in contact with Russia. We have all US Intel agencies asserting that Russia did in fact use a network of 1000+ operatives to influence the 2016 US Presidential Election.

We have allegations of pay offs, pay outs, off the record loans from Russian financiers and allegations that POTUS was actually compromised by Russia who then leveraged that information to force POTUS to push a pro Russia agenda.

We do not know how much is true, how deep it goes, or who precisely was involved. What we do know is that Trump has pivoted decades long American policy from that of viewing Russia as a nation hostile to the interests of the United States and an enemy of the state to that of  “hey, let’s be friends and get rid of sanctions.”

We do know that the contact with Russia happened.

We do know that the White House attempted to enlist the FBI to influence media reports on the Russian contacts.

We do know that the White House has banned major news media outlets that reported on this accurately from attending press briefings while allowing fringe media outlets that only regurgitate the administration’s narrative to attend.

We do know that the White House went directly to the heads of the Congressional Investigative committees and successfully enlisted them to contact the news media to quash the story and push the administration’s narrative.

It is time for an independent investigation. A 9/11 Commission style investigation and a Watergate style special prosecutor.

Below are the members of Congress who are responsible for pushing an investigation of Trump and Russia.

Send them a postcard and call them every single day telling them that you want them to go forward, ignore the POTUS attempts to bury the information,  and call for an independent investigation. Everyday until they do it.

…and please go to your MOC’s local Town Hall Meetings and ask them about this. Wear a strip of tape across the back of your shirt, with your zip code written on it, and the phrase “Not Paid to Be Here. I am a constituent from [your zip code]. This helps hammer home the message that they work for you, and it helps turn back the talking point that Towhn Hall Attendees are professional agitators. You can find out where and when your Town Hall meetings are here.

What to write:

(Introduce yourself). I want an independent investigation of Trump-Russia ties and a special prosecutor immediately.

Where to send your postcards and who to call:

The mission of Immigrant Defense Project is to secure fairness and justice for immigrants in the United States.

We work to transform a racially biased criminal legal system that violates basic human rights and an immigration system that tears hundreds of thousands of immigrants with convictions each year from their homes, their families, and their communities.

We fight to end the current era of unprecedented mass deportation via strategies that attack these two interconnected systems at multiple points. We use impact litigation and advocacy to challenge unfair laws and policies and media and communications to counter the pervasive demonization of immigrants. And we provide expert legal advice, training, and resources to immigrants, legal defenders, and grassroots organizations, to support those on the frontlines of the struggle for justice.

We help lay the groundwork for a day when the criminal and immigration laws of the United States respect and uphold the human rights of everyone, fulfilling the values of equality, justice, and fairness for all.

Organize: Indivisible Groups

Standard

Groups in our directory are wholly independent; they are listed provided they agree to resist Trump’s agenda, focus on local, defensive congressional advocacy, and embrace progressive values.

The map below is being updated constantly. If you registered a group but do not see it, know that we are working to get it listed. We are going through all of the submissions to make sure that there is a real person behind each group and reaching out if more information is required.

Get the Group Leader Toolkit here.

From the toolkit:

“Welcome! You’re receiving this toolkit because you, we, and thousands of groups across the country are ready to stand indivisible. Groups are meeting to plan the resistance against Trump’s agenda, and making plans to visit the offices of their Members of Congress.

Some of you may be busy planning for your first group meeting, while others are trying to fit a discussion of the Indivisible guide into a packed agenda for your hundredth meeting. But regardless of how long you’ve been doing this or how many people are in your group, you’re not just a leader in that group—you’re an organizer.

So: what is an organizer? An organizer is someone who brings people together and inspires them to take action. Organizers motivate and mobilize people; they build relationships with the people around them and they build a plan to act. They are leaders who lead from behind, always thinking about how they can get other people to do more.

The most important thing you can do right now is spread the word: talk to people about your group, invite them to your next meeting, ask them to commit to join you, and follow up beforehand to make sure they are there. Then what? This toolkit includes materials to help you take the next step in your organizing journey, whether it’s your first step or just the most recent one:

  1. A sample agenda for your first organizing meeting to help your group divide up the work, make a bold plan, and put it into action.
  2. Ideas for keeping your meeting on track, so that you can make a great plan and help your group mobilize to execute it.
  3. A sign-in sheet for your meeting: organizing is all about relationships, and relationships are all about communication (see downloadable pdf).
  4. A potential first action plan so you and your group can start talking to your Members of Congress about standing up to Trump right away.
  5. Tricks of the trade for getting press coverage and spreading the word about your actions on social media, so that what your group does has as big an impact as possible.
  6. And information on watching out for right-wing tricks.

After your meetings, we want to hear from you! Take pictures of your group and share #StandIndivisible stories with us on Facebook and Twitter. Email us at field.indivisible@gmail.com to share what went well, what didn’t, and what else we can do to support your amazing work.

Remember: we can do this. We will win.”

Advocate: Indivisible Guide

Standard

When we put the Indivisible Guide online as a poorly formatted, typo-filled Google Doc, we never imagined how far and fast it would spread. Since December, the guide has been downloaded over a million times. More than 4,500 local groups have signed up to resist the Trump agenda in nearly every congressional district in the country. What’s more, you all are putting the guide into action—showing up en masse to congressional district offices and events, and flooding the congressional phone lines. You’re resisting—and it’s working.

We are absolutely floored. It may have started as a tweeted Google Doc, but now (and sorry if this sounds corny) we feel an extraordinary sense of responsibility to help this movement as best we can. To do this, the Indivisible Guide team is starting a (nonprofit) organization, and we want to tell you why.

Bottom line, we want to do two big things better:

  1. Demystify congressional advocacy. We get hundreds of questions every day about what Congress is doing, how to organize locally (see the toolkit!), and how to advocate in different situations. We’re going to start sending out timely updates and resources on what’s going on in Congress and how you can best organize, make your voice heard, and influence your members of Congress.
  2. Support the community of local groups putting the Indivisible Guide into action. We want to provide shared tools to help groups organize events, communicate with each other, and share best practices and resources. This also means spotlighting local successes and supporting a sense of a shared purpose. You can see that shared purpose already forming—just look at this beautiful movement on Rachel Maddow.

We are already doing some of this! We now have over seventy (70!) volunteers working early mornings, late nights, weekends, and sick days on everything that you see the Indivisible Guide team do—email responses, congressional updates, the group directory, the website, our social media, and a bunch more. It’s been an amazing labor of love by a stellar group of, yeah we’ll say it, patriots. But we want to do more.

As we form a nonprofit, we want to make something clear: we’re not the leaders of this movement. The last few weeks have made it abundantly clear that local groups are taking ownership of the resistance to Trump’s agenda themselves. You all are the leaders—we’re just here to help.

We’re still developing our long-term strategy, and we want to hear from you about what you need and want. But going forward, you’ll see a lot more from us in those two buckets of work above—we want to demystify the heck out of Congress and build a vibrant community of angelic troublemakers.

Civil rights lawyers Morris Dees and Joseph Levin Jr. founded the SPLC in 1971 to ensure that the promise of the civil rights movement became a reality for all. Since then, we’ve won numerous landmark legal victories on behalf of the exploited, the powerless and the forgotten.

Our lawsuits have toppled institutional racism and stamped out remnants of Jim Crow segregation; destroyed some of the nation’s most violent white supremacist groups; and protected the civil rights of children, women, the disabled, immigrants and migrant workers, the LGBT community, prisoners, and many others who faced discrimination, abuse or exploitation.

Our Intelligence Project is internationally known for tracking and exposing the activities of hate groups and other domestic extremists.

Our Teaching Tolerance program produces and distributes – free of charge – anti-bias documentary films, books, lesson plans and other materials that reduce prejudice and promote educational equity in our nation’s schools.

We also built and maintain the Civil Rights Memorial and its interpretive center, the Civil Rights Memorial Center, in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the modern civil rights movement.

We’re based in Montgomery and have offices in Atlanta, Miami, New Orleans, and Jackson, Miss.

WeWelcomeRefugees90k-300x100.png

“Your voice is direly needed in this defining, historic moment, to be part of a coalition of the faith community who are compelled to be the voice of Christ, and show support for refugees, immigrants and minorities who now fear how potential political changes may significantly, and detrimentally, upend their whole world.

As the new government administration is on the brink of making decisions that effect refugees and immigration , now is the time we need you to use your voice to support refugees around the world —  thousands of families like yours who have fled their homes in a wild search for safe refuge — because home has become the mouth of a monster.

Now is when history needs you, your faith community, all of your people — to raise your voice for those who are crying to live.

This is the time that no one in the church can afford to be silent.”
